What is vertigo?

Are you feeling like you’re moving or spinning when you’re not? Or are you feeling like your surroundings are in motion when they aren’t. Then, you may be having an episode of vertigo. Vertigo is a condition where a person feels that the room is spinning or the person is spinning himself/herself. Vertigo can be very disabling and is often very distressing for the sufferer.

Signs and Symptoms of Vertigo

The symptoms of vertigo often come on so suddenly that people are alarmed and see their doctor — or even go to the emergency room — soon after. The symptoms can appear when you first wake up, or they can develop later in the day. They include:

  • Sudden, severe vertigo
  • Difficulty balancing or walking
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea and vomiting

The symptoms of vertigo are very similar to those of another, closely related disorder called labyrinthitis. People who develop labyrinthitis can also experience symptoms such as sudden, severe vertigo or nausea, but the difference is that they will experience tinnitus (a ringing or noise in the ear) or hearing loss. Vestibular neuritis does not trigger tinnitus or hearing loss, notes the Vestibular Disorders Association

Our physiotherapists also provide recommendations to prevent recurrences of your dizziness or vertigo. Our passionate team works with the patient to help them return back to their normal daily activities without any signs and symptoms.

Vestibular Rehabilitation

In this process, we provide a set of exercises to resolve the vertigo condition. There are a set of treatments that assist in resetting and reprogramming the vestibular system. These treatments can be easily conducted at home for ease and are coordinated with a detailed exercise regime prescribed by the physiotherapist.

  • Epley Manoeuvre

This treatment is suggested if Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (a feeling that we are spinning or the internal area of the head is spinning.) It consists of numerous head and body exercises to fix the dizziness.

  • Gaze Stability Retraining

This retraining includes exercises that focus on the eyes to refine the focus while motioning the head. It makes the vestibular system stronger, making it work earnestly to not let the brain become disoriented and cause dizziness.

  • Balance Retraining Exercises

It includes exercises that boost the balance whether balancing on one leg, closing the eyes, or using uneven surfaces. A greater amount of practice makes the balancing better. This can make the input from the balance sensors stronger in inputting valid information into the vestibular system to replace improper messages.

  • Strengthening Exercises

Include weight bearing and non-weight bearing movements with or without force that aim to establish strength in the body.

  • Gait Drills

These include numerous walking-related exercises. This may include walking past obstacles, walking and turning the head, or passing over and calculating path hindrances.

  • Functional Task Practice

Practicing more and more activities makes the system less vulnerable which means one can perform tasks without any manifestations.
